You don’t need fancy equipment for cliff diving. All you need is a high cliff, deep water, and a lot of courage. This is why cliff diving is one of the purest extreme sports on earth. No protection, no padding, no shoes, no balls—just absolute concentration and body control.

The sport is very simple. Usual diving height is around 27 meters (that’s as high as an eight-story building). The divers then dive and perform varying combination of somersaults and twists before entering the water. At present, there are 149 different ways of combining somersaults and twists. Each diver will have to choose four competitive dives from the list. They will also be given two required dives and two optional dives to perform. The required dives are set to a difficulty of 3.6, and they must be performed from different take-off positions, while the optional dives are performed from different dive groups and must be done in alternating order throughout the whole season.

The sport didn’t became famous until Red Bull started organizing the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in May 2009. The World Series attracted the world’s best high divers.

Let’s take a look back at jaw-dropping photos from the 2011 season. Gary Hunt from Great Britain took home the gold for two years in a row.
