The body was found in the lotus position, which according to a Buddhism expert, indicates the mummy is still in an intense spiritual meditation called tukdam.

Based on Buddhist beliefs, the monk’s position is very close to nirvana, which is the highest possible state that can be achieved by the human body when it decomposes.

The monk’s body was found wrapped in an animal skin for almost two centuries, looking as if it was preserved. However, Prof. Ganhugiyn Purevebata of Ulaanbaatar Buddhist University in Mongolia shared his insights, saying the mummified monk is still alive.

“Lama is sitting in the lotus position vajra, the left hand is opened, and the right hand symbolizes of the preaching Sutra,” said Purevata. “This is a sign that the Lama is not dead but is in a very deep meditation, according to the ancient tradition of Buddhist lamas.”

As the 2-century-old monk continues his meditative state, he has become a source of joy of many, especially those who are living nearby, said Buddhist monk Dr. Barry Kerzin.

“If the meditator can continue to stay in this meditative state, he can become a Buddha. Reaching such a high spiritual level the meditator will also help others, and all the people around will feel a deep sense of joy,” he explained.

The body of the monk was first seen inside a cave in the Kobdsk region of Mongolia. It only reached the hands of the authorities after a guy was caught trying to sell it on the black market for a whopping sum.
