The bond friendship is very much alive in the animal kingdom and it comes in several different forms. We have seen many surprising friendship between an orangutan and pet dog. However, one cannot prepare this strange yet heartwarming friendship that blossomed among Mother Nature’s notable predators namely a bear, lion and a tiger.
The charming trio who compose this small group are appropriately named as Baloo the American black bear, Leo the lion and Shere Khan the Bengal tiger. The three were reportedly rescued during a police drugs raid in Atlanta, Georgia in 2001. It was revealed that the three were originally owned by a drug dealer who did not care for them properly. This led to poor health conditions and severe injuries.
Baloo and his companions were cubs at that time and were barely two months old. The three were eventually taken to Noah’s Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove, Georgia were the decision was eventually made to keep them together.
The three are known as the BLT.
Assistant director of the Noah’s Ark Zoo Diane Smith shares,
‘We could have separated them, but since they came as a kind of family, the zoo decided to keep them together,’
Smith also shares how the three gentle giants are unaware of the fact they are natural enemies.
‘They are totally oblivious to the fact that in any other circumstance they would not be friends.’ Smith reveals.
Diane Smith shares further detail about the three’s day to day activities.
‘Baloo and Shere Khan are very close,” says Smith
“That is because they rise early, as Leo being a lion likes to spend most the day sleeping. It is wonderful and magical to see a giant American Black Bear put his arm around a Bengal tiger and then to see the tiger nuzzle up to the bear like a domestic cat.
When Leo wakes up the three of them mess around for most of the day before they settle down to some food.”
What further amazes the three’s handlers is the fact that Baloo, Leo and Shere Khan treat each other as siblings and have formed a unique bond that is quite uncommon for predators like them in the wild. The trio was later moved to the Wildlife Animal Sanctuary in Georgia where they are currently residing.
Meet this lovable trio and their enduring friendship that goes beyond species.
