Costa Rican animal lover Chito, a.k.a. the Crocodile Man, spends most of his time with the giant crocodile Pocho. He feeds, plays, and swims with the dangerous reptile in a 100 m² lake in Siquirres. The bizarre pair and their deadly exhibition has attracted tourists from all over the globe.
The uncanny duo’s friendship first started when Chito rescued the 980 lbs crocodile almost 20 years ago. He found Pocho on the shore of the Parismina River in the Carribbean province of Limsn, and at the time, the croc was at death’s door.
The reptile was shot in the left by a cattle farmer, after it preyed on a herd of cows. Chito asked for assistance from a couple of friends so he could get it aboard his boat. The 52-year-old fisherman says that he healed the reptile with love and care, along with food and medicine. He eventually named the massive reptile Pocho, which means strength.
Chito recalls taking care of the crocodile day and night for six months. He never left Pocho’s side and would even sleep with him at night. He says, “I just wanted him to feel that someone loved him, that not all humans are bad. I love all animals, especially ones that have suffered. It meant a lot of sacrifice. I had to be there every day.”
When Chito felt that Pocho had connected with him, he began to get closer and closer to the animal; and like what they normally say, the rest is history.
Today, tourists can watch Chito and Pocho perform as they play and do tricks in the water together. How Chito was able to tame one of the wildest beasts in the animal kingdom is beyond comprehension. What’s even more amazing about their relationship is that it proves that even the most ferocious animal in the world still knows what friendship is.
And Chito has this to say about his fierce friend: “I am happy because I rescued him and he is happy with me because he has everything he needs.”
