Seeing a whale up close is a thrill for most boaters, but it seems that these big animals have as much fascination for humans as we have for them.

In a video uploaded from 2012, this curiosity is clear. A gray whale calf and his mom approached a boat full of tourists—and seeing how much these humans seem to want to touch the calf, the mother whale lifted her young out of the water so that the boaters can take a closer look and pet him! The tourists were blown away by the mere fact that they are so close to not only one but two majestic whales.
One World, One Ocean said about the interaction, “The gray whales in San Ignacio Lagoon frequently approach small tourist boats, seeking the human interaction. While they could easily avoid the people, whose small boats are not allowed to closely approach whales, they actually seem to enjoy making contact.”
This shows how wonderfully connected everything is in the world—and we’re not only talking about the same-species interaction.
