This 182-Year-Old Tortoise Is the Oldest Living Animal …See How He Looked in 1902

, ,

Can you imagine yourself living for almost 200 years? Well, this giant tortoise can.

Jonathan, a giant tortoise, is already 182 years old. He may not be as quick as he once was, but he is still going strong. Jonathan is the oldest living tortoise in the planet and perhaps the oldest terrestrial animal too.

People believe that the giant tortoise arrived in the island of St. Helena in 1882. A photo taken in 1902 portrays Jonathan at his full adult size. Naturally, it would take a giant tortoise 50 years to reach its adult size, which suggests that he might have been born in the year 1832.

Jonathan may be the oldest living land animal, but he is not the oldest ever. Records state that tortoises have lived longer. There is even an unconfirmed case of a tortoise in India that is believed to have lived roughly 250 years.
