Disney Patented This Wedding Cake Concept And It is Impressive

, ,

On September 2014, a video of Disney’s projected wedding cake became viral on the Internet. Since then, social media went crazy over fairy tale-like ideas for a wedding cake, such as pixies and fairies sprinkling dust over the cake. Of  course, with the technology available today, everything is possible. You can now animate and alter the color of your cake. You can also display photos of the bride and groom. What’s great is that you can even project fireworks onto it.

However, if you take a closer look at the history of projection mapping space, you will know that the wedding cake that became viral on 2014 isn’t the first ever projection mapped wedding cake. So, where did it all start? Let’s dig into the beginnings of the projected cake.

Disney was the first ever company that introduced the projection mapped cake. They patented the idea way back June 2009 – US Patent 8223196, which involves projector methods and systems for producing interactive food products, such as cakes.

The patented cake display of Disney makes use of a sensor to obtain a 3D model of the cake in real-time. This way, they can incorporate interactive animations.

Disney said:

“For example, the projected image may include a lake located on a surface of a cake, and a computer system running a depth/topology processor module or program may determine when and where a piece is cut out of the cake. In response, the computer system or system controller may render the projected image with the new surface topology to provide a waterfall flowing from the lake into the void or resulting space in the projection surface corresponding to the removed piece of cake to form a pool on the cake pan or recessed cake surface.”

From there, more projected cakes came out. Among all, Christian Escriba’s cake mapping on November 2009 became a standout. Check it out below:
