Last Friday, the United States celebrated the annual National Doughnut Day. This delectable celebration which is celebrated every first Friday of June originated in 1938. It was to honor the Salvation Army’s ‘doughnut girls’ who served these treats to American soldiers during the First World War.

To mark this year’s National Doughnut Day, here are some sweet things you should know about this yummy holiday.

1.) Tallest stack of doughnuts

The world’s tallest stack of doughnuts was created by the members of the 20th Century Fox and Capital Radio to celebrate the premier of The Simpsons Movie. The stack measured 43.5 inches tall (110.5 cm) and was built at the offices of Capital Radio in Leicester Square, London, UK on July 25, 2007.

2.) Largest box of doughnuts

This world record was came in the form of a box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts that weighed a whopping 135 kg. The said box was created by the Kuwait Food Co. Americana (Kuwait) in Kuwait. The said record was set on May 30, 2009.

3.) Longest line of doughnuts

The longest line of doughnuts was achieved by Friedrichstadt-Palast in Berlin, Germany on April 27, 2014. The said doughnut line measured a staggering 1,841 ft and 10 (561.4 m) inches in length. The record was an attempt to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the new building of the company in Europe’s Show Palace.

4.) Largest doughnut mosaic

The largest doughnut mosaic was achieved on Jan 7, 2012 at the Market Square on Lviv, Ukraine. The event took place during the Ukrainian Christmas Day as part of their Pampukh Festival. The mosaic was composed of 7, 040 doughnuts. Shortly after the record attempts, the doughnuts were given freely to the public who gathered on Market Square.

5.) Most jam doughnuts eaten in one minute

The person who achieved this world record goes by the name of an American named Patrick Bertoletti. He downed three of them (without licking his lips, is apparently one of the rules of jelly doughnut eating). The feat was achieved at the Sierra Studios in Dundee, Illinois, USA on January 14, 2012. Bertoletti is known to hold several food related records which include the Most Peanut Butter and Jelly Sandwiches Eaten in One Minute.

6.) Most jam doughnuts eaten in three minutes

Lup Fun Yau holds the record for the most sugared jam doughnuts eaten in three minutes without licking. Yau reportedly consumed six doughnuts during the event held at The Sun Offices in London, UK on May 2, 2007. The said record was also held by British man Steve McHugh who attempted the record back in 2002.

 

 

7.) Most powdered doughnuts eaten in three minutes

Australian national Shamus Petherick achieved this world record at Donuts Coffee N More in Deception Bay at Queensland, Australia. The feat was done on December 12, 2010. He was able to consume 6 doughnuts at the event.

8.) Fastest time to eat a jam doughnut with no hands

The fastest time to eat a jam doughnut with no hands and without licking the lips is 11.41 seconds. This was achieved by American Phillip Joseph on April 17, 2014 at San Francisco, California.
