Adding the sweetness and bright colors of Jell-O makes a different frosting in both how it tastes and how it looks. By using Jell-O as your base flavor, you are able to choose from the many varieties that are sold in stores.
Aside from its ease of use, Jell-O frosting also sets quite nicely. Because it contains gelatin, the frosting won’t lose its shape when it is spread onto the cakes or cupcakes. Even though it is not a dense frosting, it still has a structure. It’s easy to do, and probably the only part that people would think is difficult is mixing the boiling water. By using a stand mixer, this won’t be an issue at all.
There are other recipes that will simply blend Jell-O with the whipped cream and sugar, but this technique doesn’t quite achieve the same output because the gelatin does not melt without the boiling water. The best recipe for Jell-O frosting comes from Happier Than a Pig in Mud. Read on below to see what the recipe involves.
- 3 oz. Instant Jell-O (choose any flavor that you like)
- ½ cup boiling water
- 2/3 cup white sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- 1 egg white
You don’t have to worry about adding raw egg because the boiling water will kill off any bacteria.
- In a large bowl, mix all ingredients except the boiling water.
- With the speed of the mixer on medium, slowly add the boiling water to the mixture of dry ingredients.
- After the water has been added, turn up the speed of the mixer to high. Mix for 5 minutes.
And as easy as that, you have your flavored frosting.
