The company has declared that instead of giving away toys with their Happy Meals, they will be giving paperback books. Among the titles they will be giving away are Paddington by Michael Bond and Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff.

McDonald’s has partnered with Reading Is Fundamental, a literacy charity, and the publisher Harper Collins to give away the specially made books that will measure 4.5 inches by 5.5 inches. It will be big enough to fit into the Happy Meal box. The promotion will see the company give out 50 million books between 2013 and 2016.

Chief executive of Reading Is Fundamental, Carol Rasco, said that the books are the building blocks for a better future.  They will foster the child’s imagination and fuel a love of learning.
