Photos documenting a baby’s birth never fail to warm our hearts. In the same manner, capturing that moment when a parent meets their adopted baby for the first time will surely make our hearts leap with joy.
David and Sarah Olsen, a couple of two children from Minnesota, felt their family is never complete yet. Their hearts were screaming for one more!
“We knew that our family wasn’t complete yet. We knew that we wanted three; we always wanted three. And something in my heart wasn’t done yet,” said Sarah.
Their desire to adopt began with Sarah’s pregnancy of their second kid, Levi. As it was with her first son, Zakary, he was a tough pregnancy. When Levi came out, he was diagnosed with spina bifida, a birth defect wherein the baby’s spinal cord is undeveloped, causing a lot of muscles to be hardly controlled.
“We were getting [told] things, like, he may never walk, he might not be able to go to the bathroom on his own,” said Sarah. ”These are huge, shocking statements when you’re hearing them for the first time and you’re holding your brand newborn child.”
The couple who has been married for ten years tried to have a third biological child but was unsuccessful. Doctors didn’t recommend it either, as mothers who give birth to one child with spina bifida are more likely to have another child with the same problem.
Not wanting to give up on their dream of a family of three children, they considered adoption.
”We took the next couple months to really pray about it, to think about it, to talk about it with each other,” David said. ”And it felt like that was the way God wanted us to finish our family.”
After the couple had had finally decided to push through with the adoption, they found out that they had a match in Florida and immediately flew in to pick their new little girl.
This picture shows the excited couple showing off their new baby on a phone while in the airport.
They brought with them their photographer friend, Kirsten Prosser, and went to the hospital to bring home the newest addition to their family, Tilly Pearl Olsen.
”I have always wanted to photograph the first meeting of an adopted baby,” Kirsten said. “It was one of the most special moments of my life . . . [and] I was so privileged to watch this all unfold. What a perfect example of unconditional and sacrificial love.”
Once in Florida, they anxiously waited in the hospital where they are about to meet their little angel.
When they finally saw their baby for the first time, Sarah could hardly contain her joy. David stands behind her looking equally excited. Holding her daughter in her arms while David looks adoringly was one of the most priceless moments ever captured.
