Each girl has dreamt of having their own fairy tale-like wedding dress since they were a kid. But, an extremely long wedding dress is definitely not what they are looking for.
Jing Mei, a bride from Chengdu, Southwest China, shared about her record-breaking idea of setting the world’s longest wedding dress. She said, “It started off as a mad idea and then we thought we could actually make it happen. We’re both delighted with the result and we are definitely going to contact the Guinness World Records to get them to agree that this is an official record breaking dress”.
Because this long wedding dress weighs 50 kilograms and runs 3 miles, it took one month to make and required 40 bridesmaids to carry it.
According to Yuan, Jing’s husband, the dress costs £4,000 or $6,500, approximately the yearly wage of an average Chinese employee. He also added, “It is her day, so what she says goes”.
Jing Mei broke the record set by another Chinese bride in 2009.
Twenty-five-year-old bride Lin Rong from Jilin Province, China was also said to have set the world record for the world’s longest wedding dress train when she wore a 1.5 meter wide, 2,162-meter long wedding gown handmade by the family of her groom. She wore it on her wedding day.
The wedding dress took three months to finish and cost about $5,856. It took almost three hours for railroad worker Zhao Peng, the groom-to-be, to unveil the longest wedding dress train in Jiangbin Park.
Over 200 wedding guests help to completely unroll the wedding dress. They pinned over 9,999 red roses made of silk in the morning, so that Lin could finally put on her dress. “I also had 608 crystals stitched on the dress train in memory of our 608 dating days, starting from the first time I met with her,” Zhao added.
Zhao elaborated his plan saying, “Both the length of the dress and the number of silk roses pinned on the wedding dress can make history”. After the wedding, he cut the gown to 1,984.1,022 meters.
The romantic gesture of the groom-to-be made Lin break down in tears.
While planning for his wedding, Zhao got inspiration from the Guinness world record of the longest wedding dress created in Romania. He said, “I do not want a cliche wedding parade or banquet, nor can I afford the extravagance of a hot balloon wedding”.
Zhao’s mother strongly opposed his idea saying, “It is a waster of money in my opinion”. But, she later on said, “Though I understand that he wants to show his love on the big day”.
When he finally persuaded his family, his aunt agreed to design the gown. Other members of the family helped in looking for the materials.
Romanian model Emma Dumitrescu held the previous Guinness world record for the longest wedding gown, running 1.85 miles. It was worn in 2012 to promote a wedding fair event in Bucharest.
However, the World Record Academy stated, “that previous ‘record’ may be considered a cheap publicity stunt and not a valid record (by our standards and common sense) simply because the a wedding dress needs to be used by a bride, to make the record valid”.
