George Kirby, born June 13, 1912, and Doreen Kirby, born September 6, 1923, have set a stunning world record as the oldest couple to marry. With an aggregate age that adds up 195, Guinness World Records has confirmed that the British couple is the oldest newlyweds, following a detailed research.

The wedding took place at the Langham Hotel in Eastbourne, East Sussex, UK, on June 12, 2015. On their wedding day, Guinness recorded that their combined lifespan was an amazing 194 years and 280 days.

Doreen was 91 years and 280 days old when she exchanged vows with George, who turned 103 that day.

The newlyweds broke a record that remained unbeatable since February 1, 2002. The record that they broke, belonged to Madeleine Francinueau (France, born July 15, 1907) and François Fernandez (France, born April 17, 1906) whose combined lifespan on the day of their wedding was 190 years 126 days. The previous record holder got wed in their rest house in Le Foyer du Romarin, Clapiers, France.

After being together for almost three decades, George and Doreen finally tied the knot after his 63-year-old son, Neil, who also owns the wedding venue, and his wife, Wendy, along with the pair’s many other children (seven between them) and 15 grandchildren, convinced them to.

George, who used to be a physical education instructor for Royal Air Force, spoke to Daily Mirror and said, “It was about time, really. Doreen keeps me young, and I can definitely say we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.” George popped the question on Valentine’s Day earlier this year.

Both George and Doreen had been married once. Twenty-seven years ago, they met through an organization, which helps elderly people find their own group of friends. Once they found each other, and 2 years of courting, the pair then moved in together.

The Kirbys aren’t really the oldest couple ever to have married. Karl Dolven (born August 31, 1897) married Gudrun Haug (born October 14, 1900), who got wed at Hole, Norway, on June 4, 1927, are the oldest newlyweds ever.

Karl and Gudrun remained as husband and wife until Gudrun died in April 24, 2oo4. At the time of Gudrun’s death, the couple’s combined age was an astonishing 210 years and 65 days. Karl was 106 years and 237 days old, while Gudrun was aged 103 years and 193 days.
