Depp made headlines again dressed as the lovable pirate when he recently did a surprise visit at the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, Australia last Tuesday. The 52-year-old actor was also accompanied by fellow co-star British actor Stephen Graham who came in full garb as his character Scrum.
The actors, who both took a break from filming the upcoming The Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man Tell No Tales in Queensland, Australia, stayed in the hospital for three hours. The duo spent this time chatting with patients, taking photos with them, and giving out gold coins.
Their visit was filmed by Juiced TV, the hospital’s official 30-minute weekly program made by the kids of Lady Cilento’s.
The Children’s Foundation Hospital was more than happy to share photos of their encounter with the legendary Capt. Jack Sparrow. The pictures showed the elated patients on the 11th floor of the hospital who had the chance of getting up close and personal with Depp in character.
Max Bennett, a 7-year-old patient from the hospital who has transverse myelitis, a rare neurological disorder, was one of the youngsters to meet and greet with the Hollywood star. His mother Rachel shares the experience in an interview with ABC Australia describing how Depp had gone from room to room seeing all kids who could not get out of their beds before giving them gold coins engraved with a pirate’s head.
“It was really beautiful. Everyone kept on trying to move Depp on, but he kept on coming back. He came on the condition that he wasn’t pushed along and crowded by adults and he could spend as much time as he wanted with the kids.”
This is not the first time that Depp had done this deed. Back in 2010, Depp also visited the Great Osmond Street Hospital in London where his daughter Lily Rose was admitted for contracting E. coli and suffering from kidney failure. Depp initially donated a million pounds to the hospital, but came back again two years later dressed as Capt. Jack Sparrow to visit the kids.
The Hollywood actor admitted back in an interview in 2013 that he always brought his costume with him even when they were not filming the movie.
“Sometimes you go to kiddie hospitals and things like that. I’ll just sneak in and go and surprise a bunch of kiddies through the different wards… It basically turns into a two-, three-hour improvisation and it’s really fun. So I travel with Captain Jack.”
