The 30-year-old mother, identified as Xiang Liujuan, was going up a floor at the Anliang Department in Jingzhou, China, when the incident happened. Together with her son, Xiang used an escalator, but when they were about to reach the floor, they were greeted with a grim warning from the staff.
It turned out the escalator was dysfunctional and that the maintenance crew forgot to screw the footplate of the escalator tightly. By the time Xiang reached the floor, the escalator’s footplate gave in.
Just before Xiang was about to fall into the chasm, she managed to throw her two-year-old son away from danger. Xiang was still hanging onto what remained of the footplate while the staff tried to pull her into safety, but after a few seconds of struggling, Xiang fell into escalator.
Although he wasn’t with his family when the incident happened, the grieving father witnessed his wife die through a CCTV footage.
It took four hours for Xiang’s body to be recovered from the faulty machinery.
Netizens expressed their admiration for the mother’s selfless act, while others were furious of the department store’s management.
Escalator accidents as well as other machine-related casualties are prevalent in China due to the loose implementation of laws regulating such.
A different escalator accident happened in July 2011, which killed a 13-year-old boy and injuring 20 other people. Another one took place in 2012 that caused the death of a nine-year-old boy in a Beijing department store.
