Sgt. Matthew Whalen served his country, and even after his death, he continues to give back.
Sergeant Whalen suffered a brain hemorrhage and was declared brain-dead. His family made the heartbreaking decision to turn off his life support machine. To honor his sacrifice, veterans lined the hospital hallways to give Whalen a final salute as he was wheeled past.
He leaves behind his wife, Hannah Whalen, and his two young children.
Hannah was overwhelmed by the tribute and said, “It was so nice to have all of those vets there because we just talked about Matt and made jokes.”
One of Sergeant Whalen’s comrades uploaded a video of the tribute to his Facebook page, and it has since been viewed more than 10 million times.
Until he drew his last breath, the soldier continued to display bravery and selflessness, evidenced by his dying wish. Sergeant Whalen’s final act was to donate his organs to two patients who also happened to be veterans.
