Famous actor Zach Galifianakis rescued an 87-year-old homeless woman and took her as his date to the premier night of the movie The Hangover: Part III held in Los Angeles.
The woman’s name is Elizabeth “Mimi” Haist, who worked in a laundromat in Santa Monica, California, where she first met Zach 18 years ago, according to Star magazine.
However, after hearing about the awful living condition of the his old acquaintance, Zach quickly took Mimi off the streets and bought her an apartment.
Zach and Mimi were photographed walking hand-in-hand in the red carpet during the Hangover 3 premier night. The two were also seen together during the premiere of The Hangover Part 2 in 2011.
Short after their first meeting, for years, Zach has lost touch with Mimi, only to discover that since they last met, things had turned dire for the Mimi. To help her, Zach promptly bought an apartment with one bedroom and one bathroom two years ago.
Zach was not alone in this noble effort, though. He asked fellow celebrity Renee Zellweger to help decorate Mimi’s apartment.
‘Renee furnished the apartment and made sure that Mimi always has food in her fridge,’ according to a source.
Above is a promotional drawing for the upcoming documentary about the unlikely friendship of Zach and Mimi.
Mimi first became homeless at the age of 55 after parting ways with her unfaithful husband, as stated in the documentary titled Queen Mimi, which is currently in production. After the unprecedented turn of events, Mimi was forced to work and live in the laundromat for almost 18 years due to financial instability.
She lived off tips from patrons of the Santa Monica laundromat in exchange for folding their laundry. If not for Zach, she would have still been working hard to earn a penny to buy a hot meal for herself for she has no living relatives.
This was not the first time Mimi attended a red carpet event. Zach previously took Mimi to the premier nights of two of his other movies, The Hangover Part II and The Campaign.
When Zach Galifianakis asked for her help, actress Renee Zellweger (above) didn’t hesitate to join hands with her long-time friend to improve the life of 87-year-old Mimi.
Even before this news broke out, Galifianakis has always been blunt about his sentiments regarding the chasm of celebrity status.
After a terrible storm that hit Oklahoma, he made a statement saying, ‘Just like with any disaster, you feel silly doing a red carpet thing. “All of this is very bizarre to me and silly. The worship of celebrity is bad for our culture, to be honest. But as far as Oklahoma, obviously, you just hope and pray that things will turn up.”
