“A Sumter police officer responded to a call. He saw that a young boy was sleeping on a floor because he didn’t have a bed, and did his homework there as well. The officer decided to get this young man a bed to sleep on, a desk to do his homework, and a wii to have some fun. That officer is my little brother and I couldn’t be more proud of that.”

When 13-year-old Cameron Simmons called the police after a fight with his mother, police officer Gaetano Acerra immediately went to find out what happened. The boy told the officer his story and that he didn’t want to live in his house anymore because he was already suffering from back pain due to sleeping on an air mattress that deflates during the night.

Acerra was moved by the boy’s story. And after a few weeks, he visited the boy, along with his presents, a new bed, a television, and a desk. He also gave a game system that someone donated after knowing the boy’s story.

The police officer shared with WIS-TV, “My heart went out for him. I thought the little things that he needed I could give him, to make him a happier kid”.

“I didn’t do this for publicity or to get people to notice me. I did it because I could. It was the right thing to do and I think people should do things like this,” he continued.

Aside from giving the kid material things, Acerra gave him something far more important. And that is friendship. He plans to come back again in the near future with more furniture.
