If there was ever a bond to describe the love between a nurse and a patient, it would be the bond that grew between a young girl battling leukemia and her all time favorite male nurse, Matt Hickling.
Hickling is a nurse in Albany, New York and he just fulfilled the dream of a 4-year-old girl named Abby Sayles by “marrying” her at the Melodies Center for Childhood Cancers last week. He made sure to go all out and get the entire hospital to be a part of it.
Young Abby has been battling leukemia for the past year and Matt has been by her side every step of the way. He always goes above and beyond to make sure she feels comfortable and safe while in his care so he pulled out all the stops for their faux wedding. A white wedding gown was laid out for Abby to wear over her clothes and her groom, Matt, looked dapper in a simple tuxedo shirt.
The staff at the hospital brought in tons of bouquets of flowers donated by a local florist for the special occasion and placed rose petals on the floor where Abby would be “walking down the aisle”.
All of the Melodies Center nurses, some of whom acted as bridesmaids, and staff came to watch the ceremony and hummed to the tune of “Here Comes the Bride” as Abby walked across the floor strewn with rose pedals.
Abby’s mom, Renee said, “I sent him a text message just to give him a heads up that this was an idea that was in her head, just so he was not in shock”. To her surprise, he was totally 100 percent into it and wanted to make the day completely special for the young girl.
Abby’s doctor, Dr. Jennifer Pearce, was the one who officiated the wedding.
Hickling said that he and Abby hugged each other at the end of the ceremony and sealed the deal with candy ring pops placed on their ring fingers. After the big “I do”, the bride hopped into the “Just Married” car with tin cans tied to the back, which Matt pushed to the young girl’s hospital room, so they could enjoy some ice cream and cake.
Abby got to achieve something she might never be able to with her illness and Matt says he’s happy to know he was able to help make it come true.
Earlier in the year, Abby told her mom that she always dreamed of marrying her favorite nurse ever Hickling. The day she received the wedding frame of her and Matt, which was signed by the entire staff, she was so overwhelmed and called it her “best day ever”.
As Abby still needs to undergo treatment for more than a year, Matt said, “This day will hopefully be one our patient and her family can always look back on.”
