Basketball manager Mitchelle Marcus of Coronado High School in El Paso, Texas, never let his physical disability take the best of him. His love for the game made him a favorite among his teammates.
In the last game of the season against Franklin High School, Coronado had been leading by a mere ten points. Even with the small difference, Coach Peter Morales had Mitchell suit up for the game.
With just a few seconds away from claiming their victory, fans were still cheering for Mitchell to get his shot by chanting his name. Unfortunately, the time kept ticking and as it went on Mitchell never got his chance.
Mitchell’s own frustration started to show as he missed shot after shot. That was when a player from the rival team stepped up. Jonathon Montanez, a senior varsity player who wears jersey number 22, called Mitchell in the middle of the game and handed him the ball.
As fate would have it, Mitchell tossed the ball into the net, marking the team’s victory. It may have not been the winning shot as Coronado was already leading by fifteen points, but it had to be the most memorable one.
In an interview with CBS News, Jonathon humbly said that he did it because of the values he’s been upholding his whole life. “I was raised to treat others how you want to be treated,” he explained.
“I just thought Mitchell deserved his chance, deserved his opportunity,” he added.
Jonathon’s selfless actions even touched Mitchell’s mom, who was in the audience. “I think I’ll cry about it for the rest of my life.”
“He wasn’t going to be able to score, but I was hoping that he was happy that he was just put in the game,” Coach Morales said about his decision to put Mitchell in the game.
Coach Morales never expected anything like that to happen. All he ever wanted was just to see his equally valued member play.
The act of kindness could have been just overlooked, but the now viral video has people praising both players.
