For three years of giving piggy-backs to his disabled friend, Xie has been hailed as “the most beautiful student in China”. He does this every day, so Zhang makes it to class on time. Now, this inspiring story is making rounds on social media and received widespread media coverage.
Although they are just classmates, the 18-year-old Xie volunteered whole-heartedly to look after the 19-year-old Zhang. He carries Zhang to school from their dorm and helps him wash his clothes. He also gets his three meals every day.
The deputy headmaster at Daxu High School in Jiangsu province witnessed Xie’s act of kindness and described their story as “so inspiring and touching”. He later explained, “They aren’t family, but Xie has been doing this for three years”.
“He’s the most beautiful student. He also exerts positive influence on other students, who readily help Zhang. With their assistance, Zhang has never missed out on one single class”, he added.
Even with their difficult situation and the challenges they face, they have consistently been on top of their classes for the past three years.
Sad to say though, they would no longer be going to more places together for quite some time. According to Shanhaiist.com, Xie already sent an application to join the Nanjing Polytechnic Institute when he finishes high school. He was already interviewed last April 23.
On the other hand, Zhang will participate in China’s intensive college entrance exam called, the gaokao. While their story has often been described as inspiring and heartwarming, it also leaves us with the question of what happens to Zhang if Zie moves away.
In a report released by the US Department of State about statistics on children with disabilities in China, “Nationwide, an estimated 243,000 school-age children with disabilities did not attend school”. This implies that Xie is indeed a true friend, as he helped Zhang to be taken out from this sad number. If only disabled children will have friends like Xie, the world will definitely be a better place.
