For someone who hasn’t eaten in a while, a little food can mean a lot. This is what Carmen Mendez realized after she went to Raising Canes in late November.
While eating with his boyfriend, she noticed a homeless women asking passers-by for their leftover foods.
She witnessed how people ignored the woman’s request. Instead of giving their food to her, they simply threw it away. Determined to help, she went to the woman after eating and offered her what was left of her meal.
But after giving her leftovers to the woman, she felt it wasn’t really enough. She felt like a horrible human feeding her leftover chicken strip to another person. While watching the woman eat in the table, Carmen thought she deserved so much better. So she bought her a whole hot meal.
However, she saw the disgusted faces of the people dining in as the woman ate. So she asked an employee at the store not to kick her out.
She went back, and when the woman was about to leave, Carmen surprised her with another full meal. Surprised, the woman just hugged her and cried. Carmen has never felt something like that—a feeling of pure gratitude. It was truly an unforgettable moment for her.
She then wrote on Facebook, “So next time you judge a homeless person, think twice, not all of them are homeless because of a drug addiction or because they are lazy.”
When Mendez was sharing an emotional embrace with the stranger, her boyfriend Fred snapped the photo below.
Ever since the photo was shared on Facebook, it quickly went viral.
It has garnered more than 220,000 likes and over 90,000 shares because it was proof that there are still plenty of good people on this planet.
