And the woman he’s proposing to? His nurse at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
In November 2015, the young boy was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and he has been receiving his treatments at the hospital where he met his nurse, Sarah Richards.
Gideon’s mother, Sosy Robinson, said about the nurse, “She was the nurse that took care of us through most of his first chunk of time in the hospital. The nurse that is teaching you how to keep your son alive becomes a very important person.”
“Tall Sarah,” as Gideon calls her, became the object of his affections when she started playing Legos with him. Sosy shared, “She always pays him attention, even if we aren’t assigned to be cared by her, she comes by, says hello, and spoils him.”
One day, when Gideon was talking to a nurse about Tall Sarah, he mentioned that she may be married. According to the nurse Gideon was speaking with, she actually isn’t but that she’d like to be.
Sosy shared, “At that point I think the nurse jokingly said, ‘Why don’t you ask her?’ He instantly said, ‘I’ll marry her.’”
Of course, a proposal needs a ring, something that Gideon didn’t have on him at the moment. However, he did make one out of a pipe cleaner and a bead. Like any other television show, he got down on one knee and asked Tall Sarah to marry him.
And Tall Sarah’s answer?
“Sure, you can be my hospital husband!”
For someone so young battling such a threatening disease, Gideon has shown so much spirit. It is something that his mother hopes can inspire others. Sosy shared, “We could easily cry and act like the world is over, or we can make the most of the cards we are dealt by creating beautiful moments and spreading the love.”
May Gideon and Sarah have a happy married hospital life together.
