A teenager with a rare skin condition has birthmarks all over her body. However, instead of locking herself up inside her room, she has accepted it wholeheartedly and she has even learned to ignore all the bullies surrounding her.
For a teenager, loving your body can really be a struggle. However, for 19-year-old Cierra Swaringen, she was able to prove that no matter what you look like, you can always be comfortable in your own skin. If you are able to do this, you can fight off all the haters and regain confidence you might have lost. Cierra was born with the condition called giant congenital melanocytic nevus. It is believed to occur once in every 500,000 births. This condition has caused for birthmarks and moles to cover her entire body. Although the marks on her skin pose no health risk, there is still no cure for the disease. They can’t even be removed because they run all across her body and they continue to develop as she ages.
Since she was young, she has always been ridiculed by bullies because of how she looks like. She recalled:
“One day I remember being on the school bus and hearing a young boy laugh at me and call me a spotty dog. That really knocked my confidence. I was only young and it made me feel different to the other kids, like something was wrong with me.”
Normally, boys will be first to make fun at her. She said, “Teenage boys are usually the first ones to comment. They say things like, ‘You look like you’re dirty, take a wash'”. Instead of letting depression rule over her, she decided to defy all the bullies and embraced her body as it is.
