Australian artist and photographer Suzie Blake is the mother of 3-year-old Max and 9-month-old Xavier.
One day, when she was breastfeeding Xavier, she noticed that photos of celebrities or models breastfeeding their babies instantly become viral, such as the photo of Nicole Trunfio on the cover of Australian Elle. That realization eventually drove her to start a pretty unique photo project called What Does Breastfeeding Look Like? But in order to gather a large collection of photos of nursing mothers, she had to launch an Indiegogo fundraiser.
While photos of breastfeeding celebrities often get shared and liked, photos of typical mothers don’t get the same attention. Blake said, “I was seeing a lot of photographs of mothers breastfeeding in the media, but none I could relate to. I just wanted to see a photo of a woman breastfeeding in circumstances similar to my own, not one that had been airbrushed or in a studio setting.”
“The media is saturated with photographs of women who are airbrushed to ‘perfection’, and it upsets me that now the breastfeeding mother is being presented in the same way. Seriously, give a woman a break! Breastfeeding is hard enough, let alone having to live up to some totally unattainable stereotype,” added Blake.
Below are just some of the photos included in the photo project:
Knowing that the photos will receive varying reactions, Blake is positive that these will empower and inspire expecting mothers to breastfeed. “I would also like all people to see these images . . . it’s nothing to be shocked about,” she explained. “It needs to be seen for what it is, not what what it’s being sold as.”
