Martina Big, although not a household name, has already made headlines before. The infamous “glamor model” first gained notoriety after getting size 32S implants. Her implants were so large that she had to have her bras custom-made.
A few years later, Martina Big is once again making headlines—but for all the wrong reasons. Discontented with her already-extreme experience, the German woman has been resorting to tanning injections in a strange obsession to look “African dark.”
Martina Big: Tanning Addict on a Quest to Turn Herself into a ‘New Exotic Barbie’
Twenty-eight-year-old Martina Big had her first plastic surgery in May 2012. Since then, she’s done multiple cosmetic procedures and has become a shadow of her former self. Big recently developed a tanning addiction. In addition to getting dangerous dosages of tanning injections on her body, the ex-air hostess also installed a 50-tube sunbed in her home to look even darker.

Martina made an appearance on This Morning to showcase her looks in April 2017. She stunned viewers with her “crispy brown” skin color.
“I was not expecting to go so dark, but it worked so well. I love it, and I really want to push it to the extreme,” Martina told This Morning hosts Ruth Langsford and Eamonn Holmes. “Now I just want to get darker and darker and see what the limits are. I love the contrast of my bright blonde hair and my dark, crispy brown skin.”
The reaction Martina has gotten from the public has been mostly negative. When she’s out on the streets, people can’t help but stare and gape at her shocking appearance. But that doesn’t bother Martina as she soaks in all the attention with pride. As for her fans, they eventually came into terms with her looks. According to Martina, they have even encouraged her to go darker.
Of course, her appearance has generated controversy. Many criticized Martina for embodying blackface, an accusation that she has denied countless times. In fact, Martina does not see anything wrong with what she’s doing.
“Yes, I have the skin of an African girl. But I am not pretending to be a black girl,” she said. “I’m going to create a unique and exotic Barbie with dark tan, bright blonde hair, and exaggerated curves. I like this look.”
Martina got her injections from a doctor she chose not to name on air. It all started when she wanted to emulate the looks of fellow glamor models Katie Price and Pamela Anderson. So she approached the doctor and asked if there was a way that she could go darker than her normal skin tone. Turns out, he did have an answer to her inquiry: tanning injections.
So what are these so-called tanning injections? Melatonin 2, nicknamed the “Barbie doll drug,” is a synthetic hormone designed to produce more melanin, giving patients a tan when exposed to UV rays. It is popular among women in the United Kingdom, and while these require prescription, many individuals can illegally get it through under-the-table transactions.
“In the seventh week after the injections, I went back to see my doctor. I said hello, and he looked at me like, Huh, who is this in my waiting room? It was very funny,” Martina recalled. “He said, ‘I have never seen a girl turn so African dark before. Are you sure that you want this?’ I told him, ‘Yes!’”
In total, Martina has spent more than £50,000 ($63,660) on cosmetic procedures. She plans to have more done later this year including a butt-lift and more tanning injections.
There hasn’t been anyone more supportive than Martina’s boyfriend, Michael. He even had his own course of tanning injections done, although his procedures are nowhere as extreme.
Michael continues to have Martina’s back despite the backlash she’s received. He appeared on the show with his “exotic barbie” and told the This Morning hosts that he hopes Martina continues with her surgical quests.
