Last Sunday, Nicki Minaj ended her acceptance speech at the Video Music Awards for Best Hip-Video by simply thanking her pastor, and then cursing out Miley Cyrus, who was the host of the show. The “Super Bass” singer called out Cyrus’s attention by saying:
“And now, back to this bitch who had a lot to say about me the other day in the press: Miley, what’s good?”
Nicki was actually referring to Miley’s comments about how the rapper reacted to being brushed off for the Video of the Year award. When she knew that “Anaconda” was shut out of the category, she wrote on her Twitter account:
“If your video celebrates women with very slim bodies, you will be nominated for video of the year. I’m not always confident. Just tired. Black women influence pop culture so much, but are rarely rewarded for it.”
Miley told The New York Times that Nicki had not effectively used the snub to discuss about gender and race in the music industry, but rather made the moment about herself. She explained:
“People forget that the choices that they make and how they treat people in life affect you in a really big way. If you do things with an open heart and you come at things with love, you would be heard and I would respect your statement. But I don’t respect your statement because of the anger that came with it. […] If you want to make it about race, there’s a way you could do that. But, don’t make it just about yourself. Say: ‘This is the reason why I think it’s important to be nominated. There’s girls everywhere with this body type.’”
The Hannah Montana star didn’t just stop there. She continued, “I know you can make it seem like, ‘Oh I just don’t understand because I’m a white pop star. I know the statistics. I know what’s going on in the world… But to be honest, I don’t think MTV did that on purpose”.
After Nicki’s outrage, the stunned Miley replied, “We’re all in this industry. We all do interviews and we all know how they manipulate shit. Nick, congratu-fuckin-lations”. And, when the camera focused on Nicki again, she seemed to have said the word, “Bitch”. Nevertheless, the show went on. And, Miley continued by saying that voting was still open for the Artist to Watch Award. She commented:
“Just because the VMAs have already started doesn’t meant the voting is done, you can still vote at home for who you think is the future of music. It’s the Artist to Watch award. The past winners of this award gone on to become incredible successes and the past losers of the awards have still gone on to make their mark on the VMA stage. Me, I lost this award back in 2008 and I was fine with it. Whatever, because it’s no big deal! It’s just an award and I persevered! So, here are the nominees still vying for your vote. Congratulations, Nicki.”
Moments after the incident, the rapper posted the tweet:

According to reports, the confrontation was actually real and was not scripted.
