When celebrities decide to take the spotlight, they know they are in for a good ride; but they are all aware too that while the ride can be so fun, at some point, it will take a turn to the rough side. Sadly, when things get out of hand, some of them resort to drugs, which leads to a ruined health and reputation or worse, death.
Here are ten of the most controversial rehab stories, both of the living and the departed, that people will never forget and surely learned from.
If there’s a magazine for rehab stories, actress and singer Lindsay Lohan shall grace the cover of the first issue. The twenty-nine-year-old had been in and out of courts, jails, and rehab centers while beating her addiction to cocaine. With her last rehab session in 2013, she was just 26, but she looked like a 40-year-old mom. Lohan also revealed that in one of those times, she even had a miscarriage.
Lohan took it to Oprah Winfrey‘s OWN network to tell more about her addiction and even had an eight-part documentary series detailing her struggle entitled Lindsay. After that, she appeared in a couple of movies including Scary Movie 5 and The Canyons. She is set to star in the movie Till Human Voice Wakes Us.
Gerard Butler had admitted that he’s addicted to alcohol, but this was not the reason the actor was sent to rehab. It was his thing for painkillers. The 300 actor depended too much on pain relievers since he started taking them to help him recover from a surfing accident.
Fortunately, Butler is now back to normal. He was last heard on the big screen by voicing over for How to Train Your Dragon 2 and is now set to film for London Has Fallen.
There’s so much drug-related issues going on for a singer who released a song with the title “Rehab”. Amy Winehouse has pretty much had a taste of everything—ecstasy, heroin, cocaine, and ketamine.
On her song, she said that she was told to go to the rehab, but she said no. Well, Winehouse did end up spending a time there, although it was obviously unsuccessful, not to mention the fact that she had a history of violence.
Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning on July 23, 2011. She was 27 at the time.
Another certified drug lover is Indian actor and film producer Sanjay Dutt. The Bollywood A-lister spent two years in a rehab in Texas for his addiction to drugs like cocaine and heroin. Dutt was already doing drugs for nine long years before his clean-up act. Dutt sees that part of his life as one of the darkest he’s ever had.
Ironically, just last Saturday, September 26, 2015, Dutt went back to jail after his 30-day parole for the case of illegal possession of arms in the 1993 serial blasts case.
Due to cocaine overdose, Charlie Sheen had been a regular in rehab since 1998. The Two and a Half Men actor is reported to be under rehabilitation, probation, and—just like his two-year TV series—anger management.
Courtney Love is no stranger to the drug addiction world. Together with her late husband Nirvana vocalist Kurt Cobain, Love was the star of several news reports because of this issue. She was addicted to cocaine and abused prescription drugs.
Love was sent to a rehab in 2004. While she was there, she wrote a lot of songs. When she finally recovered and was released, she published the book Dirty Blonde: The Diaries of Courtney Love.
Steven Tyler is the frontman of the popular American band Aerosmith. However, way back in the ’80s, the reign of the band was threatened when Tyler became addicted to drugs and alcohol and was sent for rehabilitation in 1986. The program worked well for Tyler, but in the same year, his fellow members followed suit.
Tyler was doing fine, but when he had a relapse with the painkillers he was taking, he had to go back to the rehab in 2008.
Demi Lovato just released the song “Wouldn’t Change a Thing” but was already set to prove people otherwise when she escalated from an innocent teenage singer to an alcoholic and cocaine addict in 2010. She admitted that she could have died from it. Lovato is now open to telling people what she had gone through.
It had been reported that Lovato had previously suffered from bulimia and self-injury. Everyone hopes she wouldn’t take the same path Lindsay Lohan walked.
The Big Brother’s Big Mouth host sure had a big mouth for any drug as he started taking cannabis, amphetamines, LSD, and ecstasy even when he was just 16. Russell Brand‘s alcoholism and drug addiction are often reflected on his comedic materials. When he was still in rehab, he was often heard uttering Hare Krishna mantra chants.
A country that is more known for its beautiful scenery, India hardly has news reports about celebrities’ addiction and rehab stories. There are only a few of Bollywood stars whose drug-related issues have gone public, and one of them is Fardeen Khan.
The All the Best: Fun Begins actor was addicted to cocaine. One time, he was even caught carrying the drug. The court let him decide on his fate. He had two choices: go to jail or go to rehab. He must have been in a good state that time because wisely, he chose the latter.
While these celebrities tried their best to escape from their bad addiction through rehabilitation, some stars still don’t get the effects of drugs on their health. Wiz Khalifa, Chris Brown, and Macaulay Culkin seriously need to get a lecture on drug abuse.
