Imagine the convenience of charging your phone by simply walking into a room.
This is the vision of Disney Research, a series of network labs powered by the Walt Disney Company. They later created a blueprint for a new technology that is dubbed as the quasistatic cavity resonance (QSCR). It allows structures such as cabinets and rooms to generate quasistatic magnetic fields that deliver power to mobile receivers contained within the area. It basically follows the same logic as a phone getting Wi-Fi access straight out of a modem device.

The amazing technology was revealed by officials from Disney Research’s scientific and tech department. In an interview with Phys.org, the department’s principal research scientist had this to say about the exciting project:
“This new innovative method will make it possible for electrical power to become as ubiquitous as Wi-Fi,” he said. “This, in turn, could enable new applications for robots and other small mobile devices by eliminating the need to replace batteries and wires for charging.”
In a footage provided by the research lab, a pole located at the center of the room can be seen powering a cell phone, lights, and a fan. Additional hardware will be needed to make the technology fully functional, and this will be made available in future models.
According to researchers, the technology will be be up to 95 percent effective when it comes to delivering power. It should be able to safely transmit up to 1,900 watts of power over the air as well. If the project gets pushed through, the future of Disney theme parks definitely seems exciting for customers as they can now visit certain areas in the park that are equipped with such technology. Animatronics may also run free without the need for perpetual charging.
“Ultimately, QCSR-based wireless power offers a viable method for eliminating the wires and batteries that have limited many innovative solutions in the industrial, medical, and consumer electronic spaces while providing an unprecedented amount of spatial charging freedom,” the company said.
Over the years, several technological breakthroughs have allowed wire-free charging. A good example are charging pads, which completely eliminate the need for power cords. The innovation created by Disney Research will give people the convenience of charging the phones without removing it from their pockets.
