The car of the future is here—well, almost.

Terrafugia, founded in 2006 by a team of MIT graduates, is now planning on selling its flying car called the TF-X, but maybe in about eight years. However, the manufacturer expects to have developed the full-sized, unmanned prototypes by 2018.

The car is still in its early stages of development, however Terrafugia, which is a Latin term meaning “escape the earth” predicts that the cars will be ready for production in the next 8 to 12 years.

TF-X, which looks more in sync with the world from Back to the Future, will have a range of up to 500 miles and will cruise up to 200 mph. Due to its semi-automated capabilities, drivers won’t even need pilot’s license to fly the sweet ride.

Dagby Dukach, the company’s spokesperson, said that the car “will catalyse a revolution in personal mobility.”

She explained, “With simplified flight controls, a familiar layout and automated vertical takeoff and landed technology, the TF-X will make personal aviation more accessible than ever before.”

Both a plane and a car, the TF-X is a plug-in electric hybrid that runs on premium unleaded fuel and will cost about the same as a high-end luxury vehicle.

Despite the futuristic idea, this isn’t Terrafugia’s first flying vehicle. The previous one, called the Transition, looks a lot like an airplane, but can drive on the ground a well. So far, it already clocked in 100 hours of flying and driving time, which is pretty impressive.

Right now, the company is developing scale prototypes for the TF-X so that they can carry out flight testing, and it should come soon as the company already requested special authorization from the Federal Aviation Administration, which they were granted with in December.

Said Dukach, “We believe that the TF-X will revolutionize personal transportation and will create a new dimension of personal freedom for us all.”
