We are now in the age of the megatall skyscrapers.
The first megatall structure was the Burj Khalifa, which opened ten years ago. To be megatall, a building has to be over 2,000 feet tall. The Burj Khalifa is 2,722 feet tall, but in 2018, a building will rise that is more than 550 feet taller than the Burj Khalifa.
The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) says that buildings will just keep getting taller. By the end of the decade, there may even be a building that’s over a kilometer tall. Here’s a list of the tallest buildings that are currently under construction.
These buildings will be finished by 2020 and four of them are over 2,000 feet tall. The skylines will look different in the future.
CTF Finance Center, Guangzhou, China
Height: 1,739 feet
CTF Finance Center is currently under construction in Guangzhou, China. It will have the fastest elevators in the world, which runs at 45 miles per hour. At this speed, you will be able to get to the 95th floor in 43 seconds.
Goldin Finance 117, Tianjin, China
Height: 1,957 feet
The Goldin Finance 117 is also known as the China 117 Tower. It is a skyscraper under construction in Tianjin, China. The building’s estimated cost is over $820 million and it will have 117 storeys.
Kingdom Tower, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Height: 3,281 feet
Construction is expected to cost $1.2 billion. The Kingdom Tower will be used as a luxury hotel, office space, luxury condos, apartments, and the world’s highest observatory.
This building will be 550 feet taller than the United Arab Emirates’ Burj Khalifa. There will also be 59 elevators in the building. When it is finished, it will become the tallest building in the world.
Lotte World Tower, Seoul, South Korea
Height: 1,819 ft
Site preparation and planning for this building took 13 years before it was approved in 2010, for construction to go ahead. It will tower over the skyline of Seoul and cost $1.25 billion.
Nordstrom Tower, New York, New York
Height: 1,775 feet
This building will be the second tallest skyscraper in New York City when it is finished. It is a residential project by Extell Development Company.
Pearl of the North, Shenyang, China
Height: 1,863 feet
The Pearl of the North will be a mixed use building. Aside from a 320 room luxury hotel, it will have 34 floors of office space.
Ping An Finance Center, Shenzhen, China
Height: 2,165 feet
Ping An Finance Center is under construction in Shenzhen, China. The tower will cost an estimated $678 million and will be one of the tallest building in the world when it’s finished in 2016.
Suzhou Zhongnan Center, Suzhou, China
Height: 2,392 feet
The Suzhous Zhongnan Center will be the tallest building in China when it is completed. It costs an estimated $4.5 billion.
Wuhan Greenland Centre, Wuhan, China
Height: 2,087 ft
Wuhan Greenland Centre is an under-construction tower in Wuhan, China. It has energy-saving features and is expected to cost $4.5 billion.
Zhongguo Zun, Beijing, China
Height: 1,732 feet
It’s name is derived from the zun, which is an ancient Chinese wine vessel that inspired the building design. After completion, the China Zun will be the second tallest building in Northern China.
