There are so many things I love about the Internet that I wouldn’t even know where to begin. I mean, how can you seriously hate a place where people can simultaneously unite over their fear of trusting someone and also all laugh at something as utterly ridiculous as news channel mixups? I love how social media can bring people together, even it’s just for 30 seconds of laughing. This is exactly whymemes are one of my favorite Internet things EVER.
To be honest with you guys, I couldn’t even give you the exact definition of a meme. If someone asked me to describe what it was, I would say it’s a funny photo, person, thing, etc. that became popular on the Internet and will now live on forever in any applicable situation, which really is not a helpful explanation at all. Let’s just say it’s something funny online that usually makes almost no sense, and brings outthe weird humor in all of us.
We’re presented with shiny new memes every single year, whether they’re based on pop culture events like music videos or performances, a ridiculous news story we can’t believe is real, or… just something that came out of literally nowhere. 2015 was a very special year for memes, you guys. It’s difficult to compete with some of these gems below. Just in case you forgot how the Internet #blessed us these last 12 months, here are the 25 best memes of 2015:
Netflix and Chill
In 2015, we coined a new term for hooking up: Netflix and chill. You know, when your crush asks if you want to come over, watch Netflix, and just chill…. but you both know you’ll only START watching Netflix and then start making out. This meme became so popular that there’s even a dating app for Netflix and chilling. See more hilarious examples of this meme right here.
One of the more infuriating (although still funny) memes of the year was the #RelationshipGoals hashtag. From people taking it way to seriously to the people who made a wonderful joke out of it, you couldn’t see anything love-related online without the tag #RelationshipGoals attached to it. If I never see another thirsty couple try to become #goals for as long as I live, I would be fine. See more unrealistic relationship goals right here.
I don’t know where the term “daddy af” started and honestly, I don’t want to know. But somehow, a sweet, endearing tone for your father turned into the most sexual term of all time. Daddy af essentially means you want to have sex with the person you’re calling Daddy. Examples of very “daddy” celebrities, according to the apparently disturbed Internet: Justin Bieber, Harry Styles, Ashtin Irwin, Zayn Malik, Drake, and basically any other star girls (and guys) find attractive. I mean, yeah, I’ve laughed at how insane this meme is, but also I hope it goes away because it’s creeping me out. See more examples of Daddy af right here.
Justin Bieber #blessed
Back in 2012, Justin posted a tweet about how #blessed he was. Somehow, the old tweet randomly resurfaced, and everyone started it using it for, well, everything. Even period stuff. It basically sums up all those #blessed feelings. Read more here!
There Are Two Types Of Girls
This meme has been going strong for a while now. It basically says that there are two kinds of girl personalities out there: the tomboy and the more traditionally feminine girly girl. Of course, we all know girls can’t be put in boxes that simply. But it doesn’t stop this from being funny and often true, as long as you can take it like a joke.
Remember when duck lips were a thing? Well, in 2015, fish gaping was the new “thing.” When you fish gape, you’re basically opening your mouth just a little bit and pouting – like a dead fish. It looks better than it sounds, actually. Look at more examples here.
One of the more annoying memes of the year was the thighbrow. Suddenly, people decided that thicker thighs were attractive when a woman sat so that you could see the lines above her thighs. You COULD call this empowering, but the problem is that the thighbrows that are “attractive” are the ones that are exactly the right size. Lame. See what we mean right here.
Miley What’s Good?
If you watched the MTV VMA’s, you saw the incredibly uncomfortable moment that Nicki Minaj called Miley Cyrus out for comments she made in an interview to the whole world. Nicki said, “Miley, what’s good?” and it obviously immediately became a meme. Here are some of the best ones.
Okay, so it’s not really a meme, but I feel like it deserves a spot here anyway. This year, as “daddy” became a sexual term, “mom” became a term for a celebrity women want to be. Make sense? I guess.
If you forgot about The Dress or never knew about it, I just don’t know how you lived through 2015. I can’t even talk about it because it stresses me out so much. The dress IS GOLD AND WHITE, but some people thought it was black and blue. No one could agree, we all argued, marveled at color and photography and our eyes, and honestly, I still don’t understand what color it really is (except I do and it’s white and gold).
The great llama chase of America happened the same day The Dress controversy happened, and so a lot of people forgot about those llamas because the Dress was such a big deal. Basically, two llamas escaped and were running rampant around Arizona. Amazing. Check it out right here.
Freshman vs. Senior Year
When you’re a freshman, you try hard, you care about school, and you make an effort. As a senior? Not so much. This meme perfectly explained the difference four years can make. These freshman vs. senior memes are hilarious.
I literally have no idea how this happened or where it started, but Tumblr users randomly began redefining horoscopes in every imaginable way. It’s actually kind of interesting. Find out which meme YOU are here.
Long story short: someone took an unflattering photo of Demi Lovato. The lighting was bad, the angle was weird, and it just came out looking nothing like her. Someone on the Internet must have been bored and created a whole new person for this photo – Poot Lovato, Demi’s ugly twin she locked in her basement. It sounds weird because it IS. It’s also hilarious.
Me vs. You
I’m obsessed with the me vs. you meme. It basically always makes “me” the star, and “you” the loser. It’s silly, funny, and just so Tumblr.
Okay, so, I was on vacation when Pizza Rat happened, so I’m not exactly clear on what went on. But I THINK someone photographed a rat eating pizza in a New York City subway and it went viral. I have no idea why, but pizza rat is a meme that even inspired Halloween costumes. Most famous rat ever.
Katy Perry performed at the 2015 Superbowl Halftime Show with two people dressed in giant shark costumes. The shark on the left was, uh… not very enthusiastic about dancing. Left Shark immediately became our favorite awkward meme.
Why You Lyin?
Earlier in the year, the bath bomb meme was huge, and I’m not talking about those delicious smelling Lush bath bombs. Someone would up an image or a few items over a bathtub, then the next shot would be something insane happening. It’s pretty funny even though I can’t describe it well.
Chrissy Teigen’s Cry Face
Move over, Kim Kardashian cry face – Chrissy Teigen’s cry face won 2015. At the Golden Globes, Chrissy appropriately reacted to her husband winning an award with this epic cry face that immediately won the Internet.
If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late
Drake’s whole life is basically a meme, so it shouldn’t be surprising that his album cover is one too. His scribble of “If you’re reading this it’s too late” became a meme that people turned into so many other things and it was amazing.
Drake Dancing in Hotline Bling
I can’t even begin to describe this meme because it is literally EVERYWHERE. Everywhere. Let’s just say that Drake put out a video for Hotline Bling and spent the entire video dad dancing in a giant sweater. Instant classic. Instant meme.
If you’re not into football, this one may have flown under your radar. The Patriots were accused of deflating a ball to win a game, and it turned into… Deflategate. And obviously a meme.
Donald Trump’s Hair
Honestly, did you think Donald Trump wouldn’t be a meme in 2015? His hair is bascially asking for it.
Beyonce Always On Beat
One day this year, someone discovered that the dance moves to Single Girls works for the beat of basically every other song in existence. And Beyonce Always On Beat was born.
