A video that depicts teens licking—yes, licking—the eyeballs of their girlfriends or boyfriends has been circulating around the Web. Oculolinctus, also known as “worming,” is a cringe-worthy trend. Not only does it look utterly disturbing, but it’s also blamed for the abrupt rise in the country’s eye infection rate. According to doctors, worming can ultimately lead to a host of numerous illnesses and blindness.

Doctors further added that the possibility of contracting the herpes virus is really high with worming. Doctors say that the virus could be easily acquired if the licker happens to have a cold sore on their mouth.

If that isn’t alarming enough, Dr. David Granet, an ophthalmologist in San Diego, explained that someone could transfer spices or acid from citrus products into the eye if they hadn’t cleaned their mouth properly. It can also cause a corneal abrasion since the tongue has ridges on it.

The oculolinctus may be a hip trend, but it’s always advisable to practice safety. You can always show your love by other means, which are sweeter and, of course, safer.
