Mom Turns Son’s Hearing Aid Into Superheroes to Help Him Feel Brave

Sarah Ivermee’s son Freddie was diagnosed with profound deafness and hearing loss even at just three months old. Freddie was eventually fitted his first hearing aid before he received a fitted cochlear implant.

Sarah admitted that she initially had trouble fitting her son with his hearing because it did not look good. It was after this trouble that she realized that majority of the kids were not quite happy to wear their devices all for the same reason.

“Most didn’t like the way they looked boring and plain, and unfortunately a lot were embarrassed about wearing them because it made them look different,”

Ivermee shared in her blog The Limping Chicken Blog.  This became the inspiration for Sarah to create hearing aid decorations that will make kids proud of their hearing aids and even make them the envy of their entire schoolyard. Ivermee initially added nail stickers and from there, the company named Lugs was born. This company sells a unique set that allows children to decorate their own hearing device.

And in just one year, it did not come as a surprise that her business became an international hit. Lugs now come in all shapes and designs which include: Batman, Angry Birds, Hello Kitty and even Butterflies.

“I get emails from professionals to thank me for what I’m doing; it just amazes me. People all over the world are wearing the little kits that I make in my living room; it’s unbelievable!”

Ivermee, them other of now 4 year old Freddie shares in an interview with The Mighty regarding the success of her business.

“Knowing children are not just happy to wear their hearing aids and cochlears but that they are proud to show them off makes it all worth while.”
