Poor Haitians Resort to Eating Cookies Made of Dirt to Survive

Hunger is a serious problem in several developing countries like Haiti, where almost 3 million Haitians don’t have enough food on their table (some didn’t even have a table). Adults and children, especially the children, suffer from malnutrition. We all know how malnourishment hampers the physical and cognitive growth of the children.

Food shortage is not even a valid reason because the sad truth is, on the other side of the world, industrialized countries like the USA threw about 220 million tons of foods, which is almost equivalent to the net food production of sub-Saharan Africa with 230 million tons.

In Haiti, while ten percent of the richest Haitians is equivalent to 70 percent of the country’s total income, 2 out of 3 of its citizens has to make do with only US$2 budget or less a day. Fruits and other basic foods have become a luxury they can’t afford. Without any money to buy for nutritious food, it’s heartbreaking that they have to be rely on mud cookies to survive.

With no essential nutrient, Haitians are at risk of malnutrition from eating those mud cookies

These mud cookies being in laid directly on the ground without any protection, experts say eating it can have negative effects on health. People who ate those particular cookies are at risk of malnutrition and acquiring soil-transmitted bacteria.
